How offensive is the term "wigger" in the US?

I know that saying the original version of this is like an instant death sentence there (unless you're a rapper/wannabe) but since wigger comes from a slight alteration of that word, does it carry the same amount of negativity/shock/etc when people say it in the US? Thanks for input.
