Why do christians hate evolution and prefer to explain animals as "god said it and the animals appeared"?

It isn't taught. I managed to learn about evolution when I was very young, during my "dinosaur phase" - the basic concept is easy enough. But for one reason or another it usually isn't taught until college, and then only to those going into biology or medicine. That's a small minority. Everyone else is caught in a vicious circle: it is not taught because people disagree with it, and people disagree with it because they don't know it, and they don't know it because it is not taught.
